What is host modulated therapy and what are my options?

The pursuit to effectively control the chronic inflammation in the gums should “err on the side of aggressive” according to top periodontal researchers.  What does this mean?

For some clinicians it may mean more aggressive treatment plans including surgery or extractions.  But in much of the recent periodontal literature it means incorporating “host modulated therapy”, or medication, to suppress chronic inflammatory response.

Host modulated therapy medication works by down-regulating the inflammatory cascade mechanism internally, changing how the body reacts to bacteria and other unbalanced conditions; thereby restoring equilibrium and health.
