The options for host modulated therapy are limited at this time. A synthetic presciption medication brand named PerioStat (SDD – sub-antimicrobial dose doxycycline) has been used with great success since it was approved by the FDA in 1998.
According to a recent compilation titled “Host Response Modulation in Periodontics”, by researcher and periodontist Dr. Philip Preshaw published in Periodontology 2000, it is the best option for synthetic host modulation at this time. While Periostat (SDD) has helped millions of periodontal sufferers, and is well supported by research to be clinically and statistically significant for the effective treatment of periodontal disease, many individuals may object to the idea of taking a synthetic medication – especially one in the tetracycline antibiotic family. Periostat (SDD) may be expensive for some if not covered by medical insurance, and although rare, SDD may have undesirable side effects with some individuals.
